Oil on canvas - WWI era portrait

Royal Warwickshire Regiment - Birmingham Pals.

Unsigned and unknown, this captivating portrait was found in a drab state with a small hole through the canvas (approx 3 o’clock). it has been professionally restored and cleaned. The transformation was remarkable and well worth the cost involved.

'Reeves & Sons Limited, London, prepared canvas' ink stamp to the reverse. Condition is commensurate with age. The wood stretcher has evidence of worm (long gone) in one small area and some of the tacks holding the canvas are rusty. Evidence of the repair (utilising a patch on the reverse) is slightly noticeable when viewed from a certain angle and the outline of the stretcher is also visible from the front (see top inset image). These are minor issues and don’t detract from this eye-catching picture.
