Mexican carved powder horn - Necaxsa. año. de 1,906
Bovine horn with a hand-carved name and the year 1906. The spelling of Necaxsa deviates from Necaxa which appears to be more common when searching online. However, in instances where the spelling concurs with this horn, it is often a person's name. To add further confusion, both ways of spelling have been noted within the same online search results. Perhaps it is one of those names that has 'evolved' over time.
Mystery apart, the construction is typical of its type. The large aperture has been carefully sealed with a wooden plug and held in place with iron studs. The narrow end has been carved to create a nozzle (stopper absent) with an added groove around which a carrying cord could be tied, the other end attached to the metal screw-in ring which has some surface corrosion, but otherwise great vintage condition.

Hand carved wooden shield - Airedale
Inscribed on the reverse: D. Brown - Dendaric
A substantial and impressive shield made by a skilled wood carver. The inscription on the reverse is less accomplished however, likely the work of another hand at a later date.
This unique piece would be at home with anyone with an interest in the breed. Alternatively, here is an opportunity to recycle it as a show award for example, simply with the addition of an engraved plate to cover the previous inscription. A brass keyhole wall hanger is fitted on the reverse. Included in this sale is a vintage wooden stand (unassociated) which matches quite nicely and could be used to display the shield at home or at a show.
Overall good vintage condition with minor surface marks in two small areas on the front, these are not particularly noticeable, and one small corner chip on the back top left corner. This is not visible from the front or when hung.

Speculaas is a kind of Dutch biscuit containing lots of different sweet tasting spices and in a variety of shapes such as windmills or figurines. Also popular in Germany & France they are traditionally baked and served on the eve of St. Nicholas Day. Making speculaas biscuits is still very popular and there are a number of recipes and ingredients available online.
This naively hand carved sail boat came from France and possibly dates from the early 1900s. No doubt a one off and in nice used condition. H:14.7 x D:2.1 x W:10cm

Large vintage hand carved lion
Big and bold, this would make quite a statement piece - weighing in at just over 3.3kgs it is both heavy and impressive. It's also got some age to it. This was purchased by ourselves around seven years ago from a dealer who specialises in African artefacts, and we were told at the time he believed it to be at least 60 or 70 years old.
Really nice condition with a 'comfortably aged' look, bone teeth all present and unbroken. Feet are slightly uneven, therefore slight sideways wobble.

Maleku hand painted plaque - pili (Toucan) on recycled timber
The Maleku are an indigenous (aboriginal) people of Costa Rica, originally living within a geographic span of 2,500 sq. miles and now reduced to less than 700 people living on the Guatuso Reserve - the smallest in Costa Rica. They rely on tourism for economic survival and produce carvings, bowls, masks, musical instruments and artwork such as this to generate income.
This has an appealing rustic look - no edges or surfaces are perfectly straight or flat. The paint has been applied using the natural wood as a background and then varnished over. There are some minor imperfections (only noticeable under close scrutiny) but some may have been present before the painting was done. Simple twine hanger adds to the charm.

Chip carved wooden eagle with young
Originally on display behind the bar of a Polish Club which has since closed. Partially stained, this dramatic sculpture emphasises the majestic parent with the young bird below holding down a snake with its claws.
The origin of the White Eagle being seen as a good omen and becoming Poland's national symbol over a thousand years ago is legendary. Historically it has been utilised by Polish armed forces for a wide variety of insignia.
Lovely vintage condition.
